Rebels fight Syrian troops over air base

Syrian rebels say they have launched a big assault in northwest Syria as they fight to gain control of an airport and major highways in the area.

As dawn broke Saturday, rebel fighters opened fire on the Taftanaz air base with multiple rocket launchers, mortars and other weaponry, according to video posted on the internet by activists.

It appears to be a major operation, aimed not just at striking the airport but at occupying it, or liberating it, as the rebels put it.

One of the videos said five different rebel fighting units were involved. Rebel forces are reported to have taken control of the main highways in much of that area, southwest of Aleppo.

If they can manage to capture and hold the Taftanaz air base in Idlib province, it will significatnly expand their ability to control a highly strategic zone between Syria's two biggest cities, Aleppo and the capital Damascus.

Activists say more than 36,000 people have been killed in Syria since the anti-government uprising began in March 2011.
