Ontario education minister addresses teacher job action

Ontario Education Minister Laurel Broten is speaking this morning in response to plans by elementary teachers in two school boards to stage one-day walkouts next week.

The Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario (EFTO) union gave formal notice Wednesday that one-day walkouts will be staged in two small school districts: Avon Maitland and Ontario North East School Districts on Monday.

The Avon Maitland District School Board has schools in communities such as Stratford, Wingham and Goderich, while the Ontario North East District School Board covers communities such as Timmins, Kirkland Lake and Iroquois Falls.

The board confirmed that all of its 28 schools in the Ontario North East district will be closed.

The move comes after the elementary teachers union voted in favour of a political protest if Broten blocks their legal strike with Bill 115.

The controversial law freezes teacher's wages and can put a stop to strike action.

Walkouts a key test of Bill 115

The one-day walkouts will be a key test of how far the province is willing to go to stop job action.

Broten has not been specific in recent weeks about how the province would respond, saying only that the Liberal government is willing to use new "tools" in the legislation.
