Search crews are battling rough seas today as they work to find five Nova Scotia fishermen who have been missing since Sunday night.
Capt. Doug Keirstead with the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Halifax said two Canadian Coast Guard vessels, a Hercules aircraft, a Cormorant helicopter and a private plane contracted by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans are scanning a growing area.
A U.S. Coast Guard plane will join the effort later Tuesday morning.
"The search will continue for the foreseeable future," Keirstead said.
The 13.5-metre boat the Miss Ally went missing about 120 kilometres southeast of Liverpool, on the south shore of Nova Scotia. Crew members haven't been seen since the boat ran into trouble in rough weather.
Petty Officer Clinton Dotson of the U.S. Coast Guard in Boston said early Tuesday that the search area is growing as the ocean drifts in strong winds and the possible location of the boat moves.
Tuesday's search will likely cover an area 157 nautical kilometres wide and 129 nautical kilometres high.
The U.S. Coast Guard first spotted what it believed to be the life-raft of the boat Sunday night and dropped a buoy to mark the site.
"They dropped a data-marker buoy, which provides a surface temperature and a sea state," Dotson said. "It's a very large area it's been drifting over."
Waves were reported at seven to eight metres Monday, and are expected to reach six metres Tuesday.
Unsure if people on life-raft
The U.S. is searching with an HC144 C-Century, a twin-engine turbo prop with an internet connection to transmit pictures directly to the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Halifax.
The aircraft can only search, and could not help anyone who may be spotted.
"Because of the sea state out there and because of the conditions, we won't be able to provide a rotary wing helicopter," Dotson said.
He said the first U.S. assistance came from the crew of the HU25 Falcon on Sunday. Poor visibility meant they could not see the boat, but the infrared camera picked out what they thought was the life=raft.
"If there were actually people on board the life-raft," he added, "but that we could not tell. We were unable to determine whether the people had gotten into the life-raft."
