Calgarians cleaning up after massive flood

As Calgary floodwaters continued to recede today, residents are starting to clean up.

After days of Calgarians and others asking how they can help, the city wants 600-1,000 volunteers to assist in getting residents settled back into their homes.

Those people will help knock on the doors of houses that had been evacuated and provide residents with information on flood recovery and other community resources.

Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi says people who want to help should meet at McMahon Stadium at 10 a.m. MT, wearing appropriate footwear and bringing their own insect repellent.

Outdoor water restrictions

Tap water remains safe for consumption, and the outdoor water use ban is still in place, Bruce Burrell, director of the Calgary Emergency Management Agency, said Monday.

Across the city, people were starting to assess the damage at their homes and begin the long process of cleaning up.

People beginning to reenter their homes should check for water outside and around the home. If it looks like any electrical outlets are underwater, or have been touched by water, or if there is a smell of gas, people should immediately exit the building.

If there is any seepage or sewage, residents should call their insurance company to discuss how to remove the matter.

Food that has been spoiled should be thrown out, including food that was touched by flood water.

For those starting to remove water from their homes, Burrell said it is acceptable to pump flood water into the streets, as long as it's not suspected of being contaminated.

Downtown remains closed

Residents have been warned there is still a long way to go before the city and its downtown will be back to normal, although crews were working hard to clean up and restore utilities.

About 11,000 people are still without power downtown and C-Train and bus services in the area remain suspended, said Burrell.

By Tuesday, some downtown buildings will be open to the public, Burrell said.

Old City Hall will be closed for at least six weeks because of extensive damage and an electrical issue. New City Hall will be closed for the next seven days, and employees have been asked to work off-site,

Calgary Stampede officials are holding a press conference at McMahon Stadium at 10 a.m. MT.
