Acclaimed American crime novelist Elmore Leonard, whose witty, gritty and undeniably cool stories were turned into Hollywood hits such as Out of Sight, Get Shorty and TV's Justified, has died at the age of 87.
Leonard "passed away this morning at 7:15 AM at home surrounded by his loving family," according to an update posted Tuesday on his website.
The famed writer and U.S. National Book Award winner, born in New Orleans but based for decades in Bloomfield Township, Mich., suffered a stroke in early August and had been recovering in hospital.
At the time, his longtime researcher, Gregg Sutter, had said Leonard's family was guardedly optimistic about his condition and noted that he had been at work on his 46th book.
The film Life of Crime, based on Leonard's story The Switch, is slated to screen at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.
