As news of John F. Kennedy's assassination broke on Nov. 22, 1963, CBC TV took to the airwaves with a special broadcast.

Pictures from the day the 35th U.S. president was slain by an assassin's bullet on a Dallas street show the confusion and chaos that followed the shooting.

Cameras captured bystanders hitting the ground as shots rang out and the tearful reactions of those who witnessed the shooting.

"[Kennedy] stood for understanding and good relations between his own country and ours," Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson says in the broadcast.

"I feel that I have lost a friend."
