The searing 12 Years a Slave and the star-studded American Hustle in film, and TV's critically acclaimed Breaking Bad lead a wide field of nominees for next month's Golden Globe Awards, with Canadians Tatiana Maslany and Michael J. Fox among the competitors.

The contenders for the annual TV and film prizes were revealed Thursday by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association in Los Angeles, with actors Zoe Saldana, Olivia Wilde and Aziz Ansari announcing the nominees at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

Steve McQueen's surprising slave tale 12 Years a Slave and David O. Russell's American Hustle, which revisits the FBI Abscam scandal, each earned a leading seven nominations.

Best dramatic film nominees include: 12 Years a Slave, Captain Phillips, Gravity, Philomena and Rush.

Best comedy or musical film nominees are American Hustle, Her, Inside Llewyn Davis, Nebraska and The Wolf of Wall Street.

Nominees in the acting categories spread the kudos even wider.

Chiwetel Ejiofor, star of 12 Years a Slave, and Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom's Idris Elba were heavily favoured for nods in the category of best actor in a dramatic film. They are joined by Tom Hanks (Captain Phillips), Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club) and Robert Redford (All is Lost).

Vying for best actor in a film comedy or musical are: American Hustle's Christian Bale, Nebraska's Bruce Dern, Leonardo DiCaprio of The Wolf of Wall Street, Inside Llewyn Davis star Oscar Isaac and Joaquin Phoenix for Her.

Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine) and Sandra Bullock (Gravity) were also favoured as most-likely nominees for best actress in a dramatic film. Their competition includes Judi Dench (Philomena), Emma Thompson (Saving Mr. Banks) and Kate Winslet (Labor Day).

Meryl Streep, the matriarch of August: Osage County, was another shoo-in for a nod, earning a nomination for best actress in a comedy or musical film. She faces Amy Adams (American Hustle), Julie Delpy (Before Midnight), Greta Gerwig (Frances Ha) and Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Enough Said).

Maslany, who was born in Regina, will compete for the coveted best actress in a TV drama category for her critically acclaimed turn in the sci-fi series Orphan Black.

Her competition includes longtime favourite Julianna Margulies (The Good Wife), Taylor Schilling (Orange is the New Black), Kerry Washington (Scandal) and Robin Wright (House of Cards).

TV veteran Fox's return to sitcoms in The Michael J. Fox Show landed him a nomination for best actor in a TV comedy. The Edmonton-born actor's rivals include Jason Bateman (Arrested Development), Don Cheadle (House of Lies), Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory) and Andy Sandburg (Brooklyn-99).

The recently concluded drug drama Breaking Bad led a mixed field of television nominees. The series will vie for best TV drama, alongside Downton Abbey, The Good Wife, House of Cards and Masters of Sex.

Bryan Cranston's nuanced and diabolical turn as schoolteacher-turned-drug kingpin Walter White landed him a final, widely predicted nomination for best actor in a TV drama for Breaking Bad. His rivals include Liev Schreiber (Ray Donovan), Michael Sheen (Masters of Sex), Kevin Spacey (House of Cards) and James Spader (The Black List).

Contenders for best comedy or musical TV series are The Big Bang Theory, Brooklyn-99, Girls, Modern Family and Parks and Recreation.

Meanwhile, familiar faces fill the category for best actress in a TV comedy or musical: Zooey Deschanel (New Girl), Lena Dunham (Girls), Edie Falco (Nurse Jackie), Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Veep, one of her two acting nominations) and Amy Poehler (Parks and Recreation).

The Golden Globes ceremony in January will include a tribute to director and actor Woody Allen, who will be honoured with the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement.

The 71st Annual Golden Globe Awards, hosted by comedy stars Tina Fey and Poehler, take place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on Jan. 12.
