CBC News reporter James Cudmore said Monday that two staff members with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime — one Canadian and one British — were shot and killed at an airport in Puntland, Somalia.
The UN mission in Somalia earlier told The Associated Press about the shootings but did not release the nationalities of those killed.
Nicholas Kay, the UN representative to Somalia, said Monday the two were working in support of Somalia's aspiration for a peaceful and stable future.
A UN official who spoke on condition of anonymity because the information hadn't yet been made public said the two slain workers were working on a counter-piracy program and looking at the financial flow of money related to Somalia's pirate attacks.
