Serena Ryder and the Sam Roberts Band are among the homegrown performers marking Canada Day, as flag-waving celebrants don red and white to mark the country's 147th birthday today.
Evan Solomon is hosting a CBC News Canada Day special on CBC News Network and on CBCNews.ca. from Parliament Hill in Ottawa, where festivities kicked off Tuesday. The events include a presentation by the Canadian Armed Forces of a selection of photos from the last 100 days of the mission in Afghanistan.
The 100th anniversary of the First World War and the 75th anniversary of the Second World War will also be highlighted.
Ryder, as well as country singer Brett Kissel and folk rockers Whitehorse, will highlight festivities at the nation's capital that will culminate with fireworks over the Ottawa River.
Despite torrential rain that has pounded and flooded many communities in Manitoba and Saskatchewan, the provincial capitals will still host Canada Day events. In Winnipeg's Assiniboine Park, organizers were still expecting big crowds. Regina had dropped some activities due to the weather, but was proceeding with other events.
Toronto will mark the celebrations with a fireworks show at Mel Lastman Square starting at 10:15 p.m. ET that was created by Circus Orange and choreographed to Canadian music.
Meanwhile, Alderney Landing in Dartmouth, N.S., is hosting its annual free concert, which will include the Sam Roberts Band and Ben Caplan.
And while it may be the smallest province, Prince Edward Island is boasting the biggest fireworks show in Canada that will feature 10,000 of them being set off in Charlottetown.
