Police and search volunteers began scouring the fields and woods adjacent to an industrial area in Abbotsford, B.C., on Tuesday night after a driver reported seeing a young girl lying on the side of the road.
Abbotsford police told CBC News at 3:30 a.m. PT that their search and rescue effort was suspended after it became dark outside.
On Tuesday, Const. Ian MacDonald said the department didn't know what to make of the report by the motorist, who saw a young girl, about six to 10 years old, lying on the side of the road near Enterprise Avenue and McCallum Road at 6:20 p.m.
The motorist said the girl was wearing a pink jacket and didn't appear to be moving, and a white man in his 40s, who had curly brown hair and was wearing jeans and a dark jean jacket, was with her.
"The witness observed the man pick the girl up off the ground and carry her in the direction of a treed area just to the west of that location," MacDonald said in a written statement.
The witness is credible, MacDonald told CBC, and the focus turned to locating the young girl.
Central Fraser Valley Search and Rescue also joined the search, he said just after 9 p.m. PT.
"Our shared priority is to ensure the well-being of the child," added MacDonald.
Early Wednesday morning, police said they had failed to substantiate the eyewitness report.
