Chronicling Boko Haram's campaign of violence

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 10 Februari 2015 | 21.48

Boko Haram, the Islamist militant group that was founded in 2009, is responsible for thousands of civilian deaths in an escalating series of attacks in Nigeria and now surrounding nations, including Niger and Cameroon.

This map uses the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project database to plot the movement's campaign of violence from its inception to the present surge of brutality in the run-up to the 2015 Nigerian presidential election.

ACLED is a data project undertaken by the University of Sussex, with collaborators at the University of Colorado, and studies political violence in Africa. Researchers use media reports to assign the actors in a conflict, which include instances such as armed combat, violence against civilians and protests to examine levels of violence in the area.

This timeline map is up to date as of Jan. 31 and looks at all instances where Boko Haram has been mentioned as the attacker, or primary actor, in a conflict within the dataset.
