Toronto tunnel makers ID'd; police say no criminal intent

Two men built a mysterious tunnel in north Toronto for "personal reasons," and it posed no threat to the public, Toronto police said today.

The large tunnel, which was discovered about six weeks ago but first reported by CBC News last week, was dug near York University's Keele campus and the Rexall Centre, a major tennis venue that's set to host part of this summer's Pan Am Games, as well as the high-profile Rogers Cup tournament.

Police said in a news release Monday that the two male builders were identified and interviewed and that it was deemed they harboured no criminal intent. No charges were filed.

Police didn't elaborate on what "personal reasons" drove the men to dig out the tunnel, nor did they name the two men.

Last week, police released an image of a rosary adorned with a Remembrance Day poppy that had been nailed to a wall and told reporters they had also found food containers at the site.

The tunnel, which was 10.1 metres long,1.93 metres high and 86.4 centimetres wide, has been filled in. Investigators believe the men began working on the tunnel last September.

Police said "enormous" interest from the media generated a tip that allowed investigators to identify the two men.

Their investigation into the tunnel is now closed, police said.
