Toronto subway service has been suspended on Line 1, the Yonge-University-Spadina line, between Bloor and Union station due to an unknown leakage of fluid onto the tracks near College station.
TTC officials suspect the spill is oil, gasoline or kerosene and is potentially dangerous. They say the transit authority had no choice but to shut down service until the spill is cleaned.
"What was striking to me is that it's not just dripping through the ceiling — it's pouring through the ceiling," said TTC CEO Andy Byford. The liquid is pooling on the track bed, he added.
Packed shuttle buses are operating between Bloor and St. Andrew stations.
TTC official initially thought the leak was water.
"It is a mystery, and I hate mysteries," said Byford, who expressed frustration on CBC's Metro Morning. "It smells strongly of gasoline or diesel or furnace oil or something like that."
Byford said the spill did not come from within the TTC. He said the TTC is checking nearby hotels and buildings for underground fuel tanks.
"There are vapours and fumes [in the subway tunnel] and clearly it is unsafe to operate right now," said Brad Ross, the TTC spokesman.
Ross said there are concerns over a spark in the subway tunnel which could mean "disaster."
"We're trying to determine the source and shut that source off," he said. He suggests anyone travelling downtown to use the other side of Line 1 — from St. George to St. Andrew stations — or streetcar service from stations like Bathurst or Broadview.
Crews are still investigating what the substance that spilled is and the cause of the spill. It is believed to have started Monday night.
City of Toronto crews are on the scene, as well as Enbridge and Toronto Hydro.
"It will be a very busy morning," Ross said.
The TTC is hopeful the subway will be resume by this evening.
